Big thanks to Brandon Country Park for giving this a go and to Cambridge Film Trust for their kit and tech support. This was the first cinema in the park for west Suffolk and the first of its kind for Brandon - requests are in for the next screenings with a cohort even angling for a Christmas screening! Bring a blanket and we'll bring the mulled cider...

SCN is proud to be a part of the BFI's Film Audience Network and this means we get access for our members to subsidised screenings, film seasons, specialist films and talks. The Hub that oversees the Film Audience Network for our area has opened a new round of funding for any community groups / community cinemas / film societies to apply directly. The Programme Progression Scheme offers grants of up to £1,500 to groups that wish to diversify their programme or create new activity where audiences are not being served. We're proud to support the “F-Rated” project supporting women in film. Launched by the Bath Film Festival, the F-Rated project is a platform for discussing and supporting women in cinema meaning female directors, female script/screenwriters and strong female characters on screen. We have marketing materials to giF-Rated-logo-4ve away to anyone wanting to badge and promote a film as F-Rated, to raise awareness of the project. We also have a list of forthcoming titles that have been given this classification. Get in touch to find out more!

FilmBank has launched a starter pack for new community cinemas. If you have been screening less than a year, you can get three film licences for £50 + VAT per film screening. It means you can test different films with your audience for a special licence fee, before you commit to a full programme of films. Check out the FilmBank website and give them a call for more info:

We're on the hunt for a few lovely people to come on our books and help us on an ad-hoc and freelance basis with the Suffolk Cinema Network.

We need some technical support to check, maintain, PAT-test and repair our four portable cinema kits. If you're a theatre technician or a cinema tech, or someone used to working with audio-visual equipment, we'd love to hear from you. We can pay by the hour and can be flexible when we need work done, for example, focusing on weekends and evenings if preferable.

We're looking for kit trainers who are comfortable being 'buddies' and teaching our new members how to use the cinema kits at informal training sessions.

We also want a few projectionists - people who are happy to set up the cinema kit and monitor it during screenings by non-members, all over Suffolk.

If you're interested in any of these roles - or know someone who is - do get in touch!

We're pleased to announce that Suffolk Cinema Network has just received some funding from Suffolk Community Foundation, to run some film screenings for those people in our communities who are suffering from dementia, and their carers. These are people for whom a trip to the cinema is no longer an option and yet film is such a great connector; it can be a way of recovering glimpses of the past, a form of escapism or just joyful entertainment. We're focusing on the areas of Hadleigh and Stowmarket, working with dementia groups in those localities. We're also keen to look at rolling out more of these screenings across the county. Get in touch to find out more.

A fantastic series of curated talks and screenings are being held at the Riverside Cinema in Woodbridge with some big names - Mike Leigh (this month!), Mark Gatiss, Neil Brand and (still TBC but hopefully) Richard Curtis and Ken Loach. Have a look at the listings pasted below and keep checking The Riverside website for the latest dates and details.

Riverside Nights:

An Evening with Mike Leigh - Celebrated British director Mike Leigh (Nuts in May, Abigail’s Party, Secrets and Lies, Mr Turner) will be visiting the cinema and introducing a screening of one of his films. Following the screening, Neil McGlone will interview Mike on stage about his career and clips will be shown from his films. Once the interview is over there will be a chance for the audience to ask Mike questions. Friday February 26th. 75% of tickets now sold!

An Evening with Mark Gatiss - Actor, comedian and writer Mark Gatiss shot to fame as one of the comedy troupe, The League of Gentlemen, and has since gone on to acclaim as the writer of Sherlock (he also stars as Mycroft in the BBC series), writer and star of many a Dr Who episode as well as appearing in many BBC Radio plays and regularly on the stage in the West End. Neil McGlone will interview Mark on stage before questions are thrown open to the audience. Mark will also be introducing a screening of a film that has a special resonance to him.  Date tbc.

An Evening with Kieran Evans - Kieran's groundbreaking debut film Kelly + Victor (2012) won a BAFTA last year for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer and, deservedly so. He has also directed a number of music related films on such artists as the Manic Street Preachers, more recently the Dexy's Midnight Runners film, Nowhere is Home and David Gilmour: Wider Horizons. Kieran will be introducing a film of his choice before then talking about his career. Following the interview there will be a chance for the audience to ask him questions. Sunday 13th March.

Neil Brand and the Sound of Cinema - Neil will be returning to The Riverside towards the end of 2016 where he will be looking at music in mystery, suspense and horror films. Neil will be performing some music live on stage; there'll be some light-hearted chat about how music has evolved from the silent horror films to that of today, as well as plenty of clips to enjoy.  Date tbc.

Kevin Brownlow and Hollywood - Legendary film historian and Oscar winner, Kevin Brownlow, will be visiting the cinema to discuss his life in cinema and particularly his 1980 Thames TV series, Hollywood. Kevin will regale the audience with stories of his interviews with some of the biggest names in film history (Douglas Fairbanks Jr, Lilian Gish, Frank Capra, Louise Brooks). There will be clips from the Hollywood series of some of Kevin's interviews and he will be introducing a film of his choosing that is important to him.  Date tbc.

An Indian Film Night with Talvin Singh - Talvin has worked with the likes of Siouxsie and the Banshees, Blondie, Madonna, Duran Duran, Bjork and Massive Attack to name but a few and was the winner of the coveted, Mercury Music prize in 1999. Hoping to screen an Indian film of Talvin's choice to which he will perform a live score.  Date tbc.

An Evening with Ben Wheatley - Ben started his career as a short filmmaker and animator, uploading his films online. Then, after a period of writing comedies for Channel 4 and the BBC, he directed his first film, Down Terrace in 2009. From there he has gone from strength-to-strength with movies such as Kill List, Sightseers, A Field in England and has two films scheduled for release in 2016; the disturbing adaptation of J.G. Ballard's High Rise starring Tom Hiddleston and the Scorsese produced, Free Fire, starring Brie Larson and Cillian Murphy. Ben will be visiting The Riverside to introduce a screening of one of his films and we will be discussing his career on stage. Following the interview there will be an opportunity for the audience to ask him questions.  Date tbc.

Mt. Desolation 1916 - The band Mt. Desolation were formed in 2010 by Keane members, Jesse Quin and Tim Rice-Oxley. The band released their first album the same year, which featured members of Noah and the Whale, The Killers, Mumford and Sons, The Staves and The Long Winters. The band will be performing a live score to an as yet undecided film from 1916. Scheduled for early 2017.

Other guests hopefully attending future evenings in 2016 include Ken Loach, Richard Curtis, Richard Aoyade, Carol Morley, Sarah Gavron and actor, Tom Hiddleston.

Information relating to these events will appear on The Riverside's website as dates and times are confirmed.
