Thanks to everyone who came along to our meet-up at the lovely John Peel Centre in March. We made a good job of attacking the buffet spread and there was lots of chit-chat and mingling, always a good thing to see! Thanks go to Alice from Village Screen, our sister organisation in Norfolk, for popping along to tell us more about the 2017-18 programme, the ICO Screening Days and opportunities for live / event cinema screenings!

We were thrilled to receive some funding from Suffolk Community Foundation to run some pilot screenings in Stowmarket and Hadleigh, for those living with memory loss or dementia, their carers and families. The initial pilot at The Regal in Stowmarket has become a core part of the cinema's offering, with continued relaxed, dementia-friendly screenings taking place in February (Some Like It Hot) and March (Seven Brides for Seven Brothers). Thank you Regal!

Since the pilot, we have received some more funds from Mid-Suffolk and Babergh councils to run screenings in other areas of Suffolk - we screened Dad's Army in Eye at the end of 2016 and are showing An American In Paris at The Quay in Sudbury on 27th January 2017. All welcome!

Big thanks to the fabulous Quay Theatre at Sudbury and to Steve from IFT for our training session last week - and a hearty welcome to the very enthusiastic Melford Movies group who have just joined our Network!

We have another training session coming up at John Peel Centre on 10th Oct at 7.30pm. This will likely be our last training session this year, so if you're interested in setting up a village cinema but want to see the kit first and get an idea of what it's all about before you commit, pop down on 10th!

Big thanks to Brandon Country Park for giving this a go and to Cambridge Film Trust for their kit and tech support. This was the first cinema in the park for west Suffolk and the first of its kind for Brandon - requests are in for the next screenings with a cohort even angling for a Christmas screening! Bring a blanket and we'll bring the mulled cider...

This is a new venture for us at Suffolk Cinema Network (SCN). We haven't done outdoor before - although some of our members have sheepishly admitted to using our kits outside! - but this time we've teamed up with Cambridge Film Trust who are kindly helping us with the techie stuff to ensure a great, high-quality, cinematic experience! Screenings will be taking place in  the beautiful Walled Garden at Brandon Country Park. Food and drinks will be available.

SCN is proud to be a part of the BFI's Film Audience Network and this means we get access for our members to subsidised screenings, film seasons, specialist films and talks. The Hub that oversees the Film Audience Network for our area has opened a new round of funding for any community groups / community cinemas / film societies to apply directly. The Programme Progression Scheme offers grants of up to £1,500 to groups that wish to diversify their programme or create new activity where audiences are not being served. Find our more here:

We're proud to support the “F-Rated” project supporting women in film. Launched by the Bath Film Festival, the F-Rated project is a platform for discussing and supporting women in cinema meaning female directors, female script/screenwriters and strong female characters on screen. We have marketing materials to giF-Rated-logo-4ve away to anyone wanting to badge and promote a film as F-Rated, to raise awareness of the project. We also have a list of forthcoming titles that have been given this classification. Get in touch to find out more!

FilmBank has launched a starter pack for new community cinemas. If you have been screening less than a year, you can get three film licences for £50 + VAT per film screening. It means you can test different films with your audience for a special licence fee, before you commit to a full programme of films. Check out the FilmBank website and give them a call for more info:

We're on the hunt for a few lovely people to come on our books and help us on an ad-hoc and freelance basis with the Suffolk Cinema Network.

We need some technical support to check, maintain, PAT-test and repair our four portable cinema kits. If you're a theatre technician or a cinema tech, or someone used to working with audio-visual equipment, we'd love to hear from you. We can pay by the hour and can be flexible when we need work done, for example, focusing on weekends and evenings if preferable.

We're looking for kit trainers who are comfortable being 'buddies' and teaching our new members how to use the cinema kits at informal training sessions.

We also want a few projectionists - people who are happy to set up the cinema kit and monitor it during screenings by non-members, all over Suffolk.

If you're interested in any of these roles - or know someone who is - do get in touch!
